This is the starting position. All of the bungy cords tying the lines and stays to the mast have been removed. |
The Mast Crutch has been moved to the upper position. There is not much loading on the crutch so this is fairly simple to do. Be careful that the foot of the mast doesn't slip off the pulpit (I have a small bow crutch that helps prevent that). |
Slide the mast aft and engage the mast step. The only tricky part is keeping from getting tangled in the stays and dodging the spreaders. Make sure all lines and stays are clear. |
Shoulder under the mast, begin the lift and start walking forward. |
The mast is now fully vertical and I am standing at the front of the cockpit or maybe on the cabin step. I hold the mast upright with my right hand and reach down to snug the Jib Downhaul with my left hand. The Downhaul holds the mast vertical until the forestay is pinned in place. |
At this point the mast is self supporting and waiting to have the forestay connected. |
Notice that I use a push button detent pin. This is quite secure and makes installation tons easier. |
