Our Boat

HEADLINE: Precision Sailboat saves hundreds of homes and millions of dollars!

It couldn't be a coincidence that on 7/4/98 , the same day we purchased our P165, the drought breaking rains finally arrived in central Florida. Florida was in the midst of 5 months of drought, and there were huge uncontrolled brush fires in several central Florida counties. Well, the rains finally came, the fires were put out and evacuation orders were lifted.

If I had known the critical part this purchase would play, we would have certainly bought the boat sooner. As it was, we had several rainy days to get the boat setup properly for sailing.

After much discussion we christened her the "Mai B 1" . This is of course short for "Messing About In Boats", an important and relevant speech given by Ratty in Kenneth Grahame's "Wind in the Willows"

"There is nothing-absolutely nothing-half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats. In or out of 'em, it doesn't matter.

Nothing seems really to matter, that's the charm of it. Whether you get away, or whether you don't; whether you arrive at your destination or whether you reach somewhere else, or whether you never get anywhere at all, you're always busy, and you never do anything in particular; and when you've done it there's always something else to do, and you can do it if you like, but you'd much better not."

Since the weather had turned rainy, I had time to make some much needed modifications to make the boat more efficient.

Keeping in mind the basic engineering maxims:
  • Murphy was an optimist.
  • Keep It Simple Stupid
I developed the following goals:
  1. I should be able to raise and lower the mast single handed and fuzzy brained. I am uncomfortable with methods that require excessive physical strength or lightning fast reflexes.
  2. Main and Jib halyards must be lead back to the cockpit. The distance between the mast and the tiller is too great to cover when operating shorthanded and the weather is turning nasty.
  3. It must be possible to douse the jib without leaving the cockpit. This big guy just doesn't belong on the foredeck.
With these thoughts in mind we began The Transformation
